We made it to Doubtful Sound! Doubtful Sound is a fiord, which is a long, narrow and deep inlet of the ocean, with sky high cliffs. I find them extremely fascinating because they are so steep in both directions. Apparently they’re the residue of glaciers that have melted, and they’re absolutely stunning! Norway has them, and New Zealand as well! Most people go to Milford Sound when they come to New Zealand, and forget about the little brother Doubtful Sound. He’s not so little actually, he’s the deepest of the NZ fiords, 421 meters deep! I decided I wasn’t going to neglect him, so on a cruise we went!
The departure point is from Manapouri, where a boat took on a wee ride to the coach, were we had an hour drive around Doubtful Sound area. Once we arrived to our destination on the other side, we took the “real” cruise along Doubtful Sound to watch the beauty! The whole experience is a boat, bus, boat adventure that takes pretty much the whole day!
Do I like Doubtful Sound more than Milford Sound?
Good question! Both have pro’s and con’s.
Milford has road access, so I was able to take my campervan and stop wherever I wanted, not bound by a tour. Doubtful is bound by a tour. Milford is very busy, there are always loads of travellers wanting to check it out, but Doubtful is nice a quiet. I mean it’s really a shame we aren’t able to take our vehicles over to Doubtful because I would have gotten a heck of a lot more epic photos if I could. The photo below is pretty much the only area the bus stopped to take photos. But ladies and gentlemen, I guess we can’t have anything we want eh?
It was a stormy summer day, but we were determined to get some epic photos @katecraigbrown 📸 . . #doubtfulsound #fiordland #newzealandfinds #newzealand #explorenz #travelblog #wanderlust #wanderer #vanlife #wherewillthevanlifetakeyou #wherewillyourvantakeyou #outdoorcollective #canon #sony #sonya6000
We saw loads of seals, fiords and wildlife, it was great! As you continue to live vicariously through me, put this one down on your “To-Do List” while in New Zealand. It’s a great adventure! I hope you enjoyed my epic Doubtful Sound photos, and get even more inspired to get your butt to New Zealand, because It’s amazing 🙂 Franz Josef is another one of my favourites!
