"It's the friends we meet along the way that help us appreciate the journey"
We all have this great idea to travel the world with a couple good friends. But when it comes down to planning a trip with your friends, taking time off or saving money, sometimes not all friends are on the same page; they aren’t serious, they can’t save enough money, or take the time off, etc. Although a friend to travel with can be a great thing – someone to talk to, to share experiences with – we aren’t always able to have them by our side. And this shouldn’t be a reason to cancel all these bad-ass travel plans that put massive smiles on our face right?
Being alone is something I absolutely love, but not all people love to hear what’s going on inside their own head. It helps me feel empowered knowing that I can take care of my self anywhere in the world, that I can plan epic travel adventures, be safe, be happy and know that I am on my correct path. But the reality is, I can’t always have a friend around and nor do I always want a friend around. Being completely alone on my travels has allowed me to have no strings attached to anyone and 100% achieve EVERYTHING I want to achieve.
But of course, a life lived completely alone is not a life truly lived. So I make sure I put myself out there to make as many like-minded friends as I can. The easiest way to make friends is of course staying in hostels. But staying in a hostel is not the only ingredient, you’ve got to put yourself out there, make conversation, be interested in people and make some epic adventures together. Because the reality is, if you’re all in a hostel in a certain location, odds are you all want to see the same sights and go on the same epic adventures. So why not find a couple link-minded mates and make some plans! I remember a couple times in Thailand, I just could not be asked to talk to a single person in the hostel I was at. I didn’t enjoy the stinking hot weather, it made me so cranky and irritable I was happier alone in the air-conditioning than out exploring with new friends. It’s all good if you’ve got some anti-social days, but don’t make this a habit!
Another good way to make friends, Tinder. Yep, I’ve made some epic friends from Tinder, and no, not sex friends, real friends. It’s a great platform to meet people, of course good-looking people if you swipe the correct way right? I met my besties from Thailand this way and decided to live in the same building as them for a month because I loved them so much. We were all like-minded, working on our websites, taking photos, going on adventures and we were all on the same track with our goals.
This post is specifically aimed at making like-minded friends, but it’s also showing off this amazing landscape in Queenstown, New Zealand at Deer Park Heights. This year I told the universe that I wanted like-minded photography friends, who had a passion for showing off this beautiful planet as well as their ability to take great photos of it. Kate found me on Instagram as I lived in the same area and I am so thankful that she did. This is the great thing about putting yourself out there. We’ve gone on so many adventures together, inspired each other, pushed one another to different limits to get the best photo and we still continue to do so. The photo above is of the beautiful Kate, taken by my other favorite photographer friend Jordan. Through Kate I met Jordan and I’m absolutely pumped to have 2 epic photographers around me to go on photo missions with! Check out both of their stuff below.
Here’s a photo of us at a hostel on our most recent photo mission to Franz and Fox Glacier in New Zealand. We hope to make some epic world travels perhaps another country!
I hope you never let the choices of others defer you from your magical life plan, I hope you have the courage to go for everything you want in life and I hope you will pursue the path you were here to follow. These epic photos of Deer Park Heights in Queenstown are a beautiful representation of what you can achieve if you put your mind, heart and soul to your passions. I’ve worked hard to plan my adventure to New Zealand, buy a van, live in it comfortably for 1.5 years, get into photography, make my own website and grow my Instagram. And now i’ve got 2 new friends that are on a very similar path. I’m glad I got out of my comfort zone and was able to meet these lovely people and live an awesome life I can say i’m truly happy with every single day! I hope to inspire you to follow your dreams!
