How to live & work abroad

I get asked this question so many times. How do I live abroad? How do I have enough money to keep traveling? Isn’t it scary to jump into a whole new country and live there? Deciding to move to New Zealand was the best decision I ever made, and I’d love to share with you how you can do it as well!

It’s great to have the “idea” in mind that you want to travel, but do you really know exactly where you want to go?

First off, think about a couple things. Would you like to live in a hot or cold country? Do you like beaches or mountains more? Do you want it to be in an English speaking country?

Do you want to make loads of money, or just a little bit? It always helps to know what you are looking to experience.

Write down all of the key things you want from your experience.

Depending on which passport you hold, this could extremely vary your options. Each country has a different agreement with other countries. For example, on a Canadian passport there are certain countries I can go to and do a Working Holiday Visa. A WHV is exactly that, a visa where you can move to that country and work for a certain amount of time. Which is pretty exciting because it gives you absolutely no excuses as to why you can’t travel, because you can MAKE MONEY as well!

Below I will list a few countries and their website information. If your country is not there, I would suggest typing into Google “Working Holiday for -country-” and checking out your options!

Look into your Working Holiday Visa options around the world.

Australia

New Zealand

Canada

Germany

United Kingdom

United States

If the country matches exactly what kind of experience you’re looking for, apply! It’s easy, just make sure you comply with all the requirements of the WHV for that specific country and APPLY!

Sometimes your needed to have a decent amount of savings to get into the country, mainly so that you can sustain yourself and buy a flight back if needed. While you’ve applied and your waiting on your results, look into what that country has to offer.

Think about where you’d like to live within the country and activities you’d like to be doing.

This is GO TIME! You know you’ve been accepted, and you usually have a certain amount of months to enter the country you’re going to. You’ve worked hard to save the money requirements, the flight money and maybe some extra money. Now is when you buy your flight! This is when you should start getting very excited!

Book that flight. I suggest a one way ticket – you never know what your plans will be once you’ve completed your year and grown so much as a person.

I’ve only done one Working Holiday Visa so far, but I’m going to share with you my tips.

  • Save money to do a road trip before you settle in one location
    • Choose where you want to settle after you’ve seen everything. The worst thing would be to settle in one location and wished you would have settled in another. Or maybe just don’t settle at all!
  • Try something new, something that country is known for
    • In New Zealand I worked on Vineyards. NZ is known for it’s amazing wine
  • Stay in hostels
    • This is going to help you make loads of friends, and maybe you’ll want to settle in the same place together
  • BUY A VAN
    • Yes, of course I’d suggest this. But seriously, It’s the best thing I ever did. Cheap travel, pure freedom and simplicity.
  • Travel alone
    • You’ll be forced out of your comfort zone and learn so much about yourself. In turn grow so much as a person!

Don’t sit on your butt and watch others follow their travel passions – Get up and make your own plan. The worst thing I see is people who say to themselves “I’ll travel once I have a successful career and have the money to spend”. Most times they stay in their office for years, saving for something – spending it on big screen tv’s and laptops. They never end up traveling, and the time just flies by.

I know, some people truly love working in the office and coming home to their big screen tv’s, but I’m not talking to them. I’m talking to YOU. The person who has that itch deep down inside, to travel, to see the world and have new experiences. If you have that itch, start researching, apply and eventually buy that ticket. I urge you to try it once, if you don’t like it, go back to your normal life.

The time is now, research, and make it a plan – not a dream. P.S. Most countries STOP Working Holiday Visas at age 31, so hurry up!
